Meet the Members: GEOxyz

Hi Neil!

Can you tell me a bit about GEOxyz?

GEOxyz is an independent company that specialises in:

  • hydrographic, geophysical, geotechnical and topographical surveys
  • site investigations
  • off shore renewable energy support
  • and crew transfers.

Who makes up the GEOxyz team?

Here in Dundee it is myself as project manager and Douglas Forbes who is the commercial manager. Dundee is a project hub for all projects based out of Aberdeen.

We also have another project hub in Plymouth which mainly focuses on commercial aspects of the business.  Then there is the head of office which is in Belgium.  This is the home of the company and the majority of our staff, as historically our operations have all been nearshore. Our main fleet of vessels is predominantly based there as well.

What kind of projects are you working on just now?

This is a difficult one to answer succinctly! The Dundee project office deals primarily with projects utilising our offshore survey vessel, the Geo Ocean III, in the UK North Sea waters.  Mainly we have been working on what are known as “Site Surveys and Route Surveys”.  This is an essential pre-cursor to any oil and gas drilling projects, as well as wind farm development projects.

How did you get into this industry?

I don’t actually come from an offshore surveying background.  In fact, I come from an Oil and Gas background, professionally anyway.  I worked in Oil and Gas for about 10 years, initially offshore, then as a Regional HSE Manager before more recently working as an Operations Manager.  After the downturn in the Oil and Gas I worked as BDM for an industrial gases company.  I also had a very brief stint in the whisky industry as a General Manager, before accepting the offer to join GEOxyz as a Project Manager.  Returning (soft of) to an industry that I was more familiar with.
