Exploring Scotland’s Sunniest City
Another beautiful day! With blue skies all round and glorious golden sunshine, it is no wonder that our small city holds the title for being the sunniest city in Scotland. So, we thought we would share some of our favourite nature walks in Dundee for you to explore…
The Law
Now this is a walk with a view. The Law hill is the highest point in central Dundee with a 572 ft peak. If the steep incline to get to the top of this hill isn’t enough to take your breath away, the scenery certainly will. From the V&A to where the Tay estuary meets the sea. This is a great way to see the whole of Dundee in all its splendour. A war memorial for the fallen soldiers in WWI marks the summit and is an unmistakable feature in the local city skyline.
Magdalen Green
This wonderful green space is the perfect spot to relax, share a nice picnic and enjoy spectacular views of the silvery Tay. There is plenty of space for everyone who visits- making it a popular location for families, friends, couples, and individuals. In the warmer months you can even enjoy listening to some local musicians playing in the bandstand. What’s more? There is a play park directly adjacent just for the little ones!
Broughty Ferry Beach
If you’re a sucker for that fresh sea air then Broughty Ferry Beach will not disappoint. Enjoy a paddle in the water (if you’re brave! It is Scotland after all) or walk along the beautiful sandy shores. For the perfect day out, you could follow your beach stroll with a visit to Broughty Ferry Castle and then indulge in some delicious cake and coffee at one of the local cafes.
Baxter Park
Lots of locals will hold fond memories of this park. From playing there as children to having their wedding at the Pavilion. This is another beautiful green space that anyone in the city can enjoy! Well maintained greenery, tennis courts and a children’s play park provide plenty of entertainment. Popular with local dog walkers and fitness lovers, there is a little something for everyone.
The Botanical Gardens
Some may call this a hidden gem in Dundee. Located far out in the West End, the Botanical Gardens is the place for a tranquil day out. A source of inspiration for many local artists. You can spend hours inside the greenhouse exploring tropical plants and greenery, or investing the water and herb gardens outside. There is even an on-site café so you can have a spot off lunch and leave feeling fully satisfied with your visit.
Camperdown Park
Located 3 miles from Dundee city centre, Camperdown Country Park is the largest public park in Dundee. With Camperdown House at its centre, the park covers an area of over 400 acres, and is home to no fewer than 190 species of trees, the perfect place to explore nature in Dundee. You can either have a wander around the grounds, play in the spectacular play park or even take a trip into the wildlife centre and say hello to the European Brown Bears.
Stobsmuir Ponds
More locally known as “Swannie Ponds” for its abundance of- you guessed it- swans! During the Second World War the ponds were filled in to prevent reflections that would provide a target for enemy aircraft
The Waterfront
And now the piece de resistance- Dundee’s Waterfront. Home to the newly built V&A as well as the renowned RRS Discovery, there is a clear celebration of local culture and heritage to be seen here. Looking out across Fife, with beautiful views of the water and the two Tay bridges. There is nothing quite like a stroll along the Central Waterfront promenade (or a run if you’re feeling extra energetic). You might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the bottlenose dolphins or seals that like to visit the River Tay from time to time
