“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in”. It is through prior knowledge that we can support a new generation. Thankfully those at the Acorn Enterprise business accelerator programme are young enough to have witnessed the growth of their most recent entrepreneurs. Held at the Flour Mill Dundee, graduation was a joyful and at times emotional day. I myself had the privilege of being a fly on the wall at the ceremony.
A Supportive Environment
To discover this programme is free is a shock to say the least. What strikes me the most however, is the broad range of business types all growing within the same programme. No matter what skill set graduates possess, each business received the same support within collaborate office environments. That support is evident by the inspiring and, occasionally eccentric, speeches of returning graduates.
Journey of Growth
The real heart of the event though, came from the graduating class as we gathered round to hear all about their journey. From shaky beginnings to gaining the confidence and knowledge needed to succeed, the recurring theme was the relief in taking that chance to try something new. Wise words from the event that really resonated are “I didn’t know what I didn’t know”, a reminder of just how much goes into vaulting the hurdles of entrepreneurship and why we need each other to lift ourselves higher than we thought possible.
